About Komodo Komodo was set up in 1988 by Joe Komodo. From the start Joe set out to create an ethical fashion brand using environmentally friendly fabrics and having the collections produced under the principles of Fair Trade. Director Mark Bloom explains: "We had our collection made in small factories Bali and Kathmandu, we understood from an early stage that the more handmade details we wanted, the more people had to work for us. So the more clothes we ordered, the more people had a job and we felt that was a good thing." Komodo works with MADE-BY. To Komodo working with an external organisation is very important. Mark Bloom says, 'I can tell people that Komodo is a fair label, but will the consumer believe me? MADE-BY is like a certification for us, and proves to consumers that we are a fair label. The Track and Trace system is the closest people are gonna get to discovering the origin of their garments and we think that is very important'. Komodo's MADE-BY Score Card for 2008: Social conditions Komodo has established very strong relationships with its factories. Around two thirds of Komodo’s clothing collections are made in a factory in Nepal which they have been loyal to for 19 years. Komodo has helped improve the social aspects of this factory to aim for the Class A accreditation: SA8000. The audit is in June 2009 and the outcome will be published in next year’s scorecard. Komodo is working hard with its other key suppliers to reach this compliance as well. Komodo is involved in a number of charity initiatives including Free Tibet. They have, also, produced a range of high fashion sneakers where a proportion of every sale goes to the charity Wateraid. Environmental conditions Forty percent of the cotton used in the collection is organic. Other fibres they used include hemp mixes in tops and natural leaves and grasses with recycled tyre rubber sole footwear. They also produced T-Shirts which are printed in the UK, certified according to Soil Association standards. |
