About Kuyichi

Kuyichi is a pioneer in the jeans and fashion industry. Founded by Dutch NGO Solidaridad in 2001, Kuyichi (pronounced: coo-yee-chi) is the Peruvian God of the Rainbow, legend has it that Kuyichi became angry with the Taquile Indians and took all their colour away. The Indians brought colour back into their life by working together weaving beautiful blankets.

Kuyichi's main concerns are style, organic cotton and fair trade. The Kuyichi label is strong sexy and provocative:

'We strive for organic jeans and fashion, put together in a chain of fair trade'

Kuyichi has led the way in sustainable jeans and denim and many other denim brands are beginning to follow their example. Offering a wide variety of fits from slim to boyfriend Kuyichi ensures that the dying and washing of their jeans is as environmentally friendly as possible.

Kuyichi are a member of MADE-BY to ensure that the production of their collections are as fair trade as possible. They work with factories that are SA800 certified which ensures no child labour, no forced labour, no discrimination and no coercion.

Kuyichi's MADE-BY 2008 Score Card:

Social conditions: Kuyichi has built up a strong relationship with its key denim supplier in Tunisia and in 2008 Kuyichi stimulated them to become socially complaint to one of the standards incorporated in the MADE-BY benchmark social standards. The supplier chose to first work to-wards BSCI (Class B) which they then achieved in June 2008. This is also the main explanation for the increase Kuyichi is showing in social condition

Environmental conditions: In 2008 88% of the Kuyichi collection consisted of cotton of which Kuyichi produced 67% items with organic cotton. This is an increase of 19% compared to 2007. The increase can be explained by the fact that Kuyichi worked towards producing the complete denim line with organic cotton before the end of 2008. Besides using organic cotton a couple of the popular jeans styles have been made with a blend of conventional linen. With regard to the tops, Kuyichi strived to use as much organic cotton as possible but this was not possible in all cases due to low volumes and changes in supplier base.

Next to the usage of organic cotton, Kuyichi is experimenting a lot with other sustainable fibres like linen, hemp, recycled cotton and recycled polyester which will be sold in their 2009 collection
