Made For The People By The People - made is about fabulous accessories - made is about empowering developing communities - made is there, from concept to completion - made is unique These aren't empty statements. They're simple facts. Made is not about naive idealism, they are about producing gorgeously unique, high quality designer accessories for style-savvy shoppers. But in doing this Made are able to radically improve the lives of impoverished communities in developing countries. All made products are designed by influential designers, then sourced and created within disadvantaged communities across East Africa. Following the principles of fair trade Made train local artisans in new skills, providing fair wages and support at every level. Via this 'trade not aid' ethos Made believe they can help break the cycle of poverty and empower the people who create their products. The powerful concept behind made is the brainchild of Cristina Cisilino. Having spent many years in the world of fashion, Cristina's love of Africa, coupled with her belief in trade not aid, led her to join forces with partner Gerson Barnett. Together they have created an accessories brand with a conscience. That brand is made - by the people for the people. Made in Africa The cornerstone of Made's business is trade not aid. Made's main objective is to provide employment and promote sustainable, ethical trade in Africa. Made has its own production facility and dedicated workers. They oversee every aspect of the design and production process, from concept to completion. They visit impoverished areas to find, train and employ people. Made also make sure workers receive a decent living wage from their businesses through the orders placed with them. This extra income can drastically improve lives and ultimately rejuvenate entire communities. Made currently work with various projects in and around Nairobi, some already established, others set up from scratch by made. All have a story to tell. Made's Workshop Made's production facility is in Nairobi, Kenya. They currently employ over 50 full time workers, all of whom receive a fair wage. In addition to their salaries, each worker receives free hot meals on duty, medical assistance, plus housing and travel allowance. Made workers receive bonuses based on net profits generated from the workshop. Made's long-term mission is to continue empowering impoverished communities by building a network of similar production facilities across East Africa. Project Kitengela Kitengela Glass is dedicated to recycling in order to reduce the studio's carbon footprint and preserve this precious piece of Maasai grassland. Every Kitengela bead used by Made has been handcrafted using recycled shards of stained, bottle and window glass. This means Made's jewellery is as eco-friendly as it is gorgeously unique. The Made Logo The Made Logo found on all Made's jewellery has been hand crafted by George Onyango's workshop in Kitengela The Materials Where possible, Made sources all its materials from Africa. The majority of materials used are recycled from the brass, to the glass and cow bone. The Designers Made works with a number of different jewellery designers which currently include: Hayley Mardon Pippa Small Natalie Dissel Anna Rose Bex Rox Sarah Rhodes Nathalie Sergent Brian Crumley |
